First, we must say that no successful business is ever built by one person all alone. It always takes a team around you – CPAs, attorneys, assistants and other individuals who either handle things you don’t want to, or things you do not have the skills or passion for.

Just as important as your team around you are the people you start your business with. One of the keys to success is not starting your business by yourself but with people who have different skills and passions then you do but are equally important to you in establishing a successful business. Why not create a Joint Venture with them and build a business together with them? All for one and one for all is a saying that comes to mind. You might even want to add a non-profit in the mix to support a cause you believe in!

What can the right support team do for your business?

It can make your road to success easy and fun! If you were to find a minefield in your path, would you want to walk in someone else's foot prints or do it alone? Me – I’d definitely walk in the footprints of someone who has already made the journey ... I'll be creative on the other side! A strong support team can mean the difference between success and failure.

In a home business, you can have the best company, the best products and the best compensation plan, but without a great support team it can be difficult to succeed.  The biggest mistake people make is, they are introduced to an opportunity from a friend.  Their friend may be new to business – they may be a car salesman, a secretary, a nurse … filled with passion for the product or service – but they have not yet had any level of experience or success in the business.  Depending on the goals of the individual, they are sometimes left on their own to figure out how to build a business, conduct events, run meetings and make it a success on their own.  Of course, there are company conference calls and conventions, but they do not have the immediate support of someone who has had success, and is willing to teach them how to achieve it too.  Most people learn best by doing, and by having a mentor or support person available to look over their shoulder to give them confidence. Why would you learn how to run a home-based business from anything less than a support team that can teach you how to achieve what you are looking for?  Most leaders in home businesses are eager to help you, because your success means success for them.

It may be OK for an experienced trapeze artist to work without a net. But, as a new business builder, you can't afford such a risk. As a business owner, you need a support team – your own "safety net" of trusted individuals whom you can count on to advise you, teach you and assist you – and to catch you before you fall.

Supporters generally come in two forms: partner or for hire. Some you hire, some you pay for, and some you obtain through networking and outreach.  Some you partner with because you enjoy working with them. There is a common vision, they are as excited about the home business as you are, and more importantly, together the team is much stronger then apart. Obviously, you want to build your team as inexpensively as possible, but don't be afraid to pay for experience and expertise if necessary. Smart people at your side can save you years of hard work, missteps and money.

Use the attached workbook to determine your team members.  Do you have the talent to build the business by yourself, or should you do it with others? These are only questions you can answer and it all depends on you!
